Hardtack

Don’t go backpacking without a bag of hardtack to stop the stomach growlings. Heck, don’t go camping without a bunch. Bring more than you need because you know your patrol will want you to share.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all purpose white flour
  • 1-1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening
  • 1 tablespoon corn syrup
  • 1-1/2 cup cold water

Instructions

Mix first three ingredients.

Stir in remaining ingredients.

Roll out to a thickness of about 3/8” on floured surface.

Cut into two-inch squares.

Poke six holes in each square with a pointed object.

Back on middle rack of a 350° oven for 1 hour.

Crackers should not be brown or they will be too hard to eat.

Notes

When cool store in container. The longer is stored the harder it will get. These will last over one month without refrigeration.
